13 What do these verbs all have in common? They all end in “Se”!

14 Reflexive Verbs explain an action done to oneself. the subject of a reflexive verb performs and receives the action (the action is reflected back to the subject) example: I am brushing my hair. She is taking a bath. (is bathing herself).

15 Reflexive Pronouns- a verb cannot be reflexive without the reflexive pronouns menos teos se Reflexive Pronouns are different than Subject Pronouns! me is NOT the same as yo te is NOT the same as tú

16 A reflexive verb is formed by using the reflexive pronoun and the corresponding form of the verb me + yo formnos + nosotros form te + tú formos + vosotros form se + él, ella, Ud. formse + ellos, ellas, Uds. form The reflexive pronouns come directly before the conjugated verb

17 Remember how to conjugate an “ar” verb? Drop the “ar” and add: o as a amos an

18 EXAMPLES bañarse-to bathe oneself/to take a bath You are taking a bath (bathing yourself). Te bañas. I am taking a bath (bathing myself). Me baño.Nos bañamos. We are taking a bath (bathing ourselves). Se bañan.Se baña. They/You are taking a bath (bathing themselves/ yourselves). He/She is taking /You are taking a bath (bathing himself/ herself/yourself). Os bañáis. You are taking a bath (bathing yourself).

19 Other important info… It is assumed that body parts belong to the subject of the sentence I am brushing my teeth. Parts of the body and articles of clothing use definite articles, not possessive adj. (mi/mis, tu/tus, su/sus, etc.) Me cepillo los dientes.

20 Other important info… To make the sentence negative, add “no” before the reflexive pronoun Manuel no se afeita. Manuel is not shaving (himself).

37 Other important info… When an infinitive is used, the reflexive pronoun is attached to the infinitive Las muchachas van a maquillarse. The girls are going to put on make-up (going to put make-up on themselves). Tengo que bañarme. I have to take a bath (bathe myself).
