3  The imperfect subjunctive of all verbs is formed by dropping the –ron from the ending of the 3 rd person plural (ellos/ellas) form of the preterit tense of the the verb.

4 Ejemplos  Preterite: hablaron comieron pidieron  Stem: habla- comie- pidie-

5  To this stem, you add the following endings: Yo – raNosotros - ´ramos Tú - rasVosotros - rais Él/Ella/Ud. – raEllos/Ellas/Uds. - ran

6 Ojo:  Verbs with irregular stems are:  Dar – die-  Decir – dije-  Estar – estuvie-  Hacer – hicie-  Ir/ser – fue-  Poder – pudie-  Poner – pusie-  Querer – quisie-  Saber – supie-  Tener – tuvie-  Venir - vinie

7  The same rules that apply to the use of the present subjunctive apply to the use of the imperfect subjunctive. The tense of the verb in the main clause determines whether the present or imperfect subjunctive must be used in the dependent clause.

8  If the verb of the main clause is in the present or future tense, the present subjunctive is used in the dependent clause.

9 Ejemplo:  Quiero que ellos se comporten bien.  Será necesario que tengan buenos modales.

10  If the verb of the main clause is in the preterit, imperfect, or conditional, the imperfect subjunctive must be used in the dependent clause.

11 Ejemplo:  Él habló así para que comprendiéramos.  Me soprendió que ellos no se dieran la mano.  Ella no quería que yo pagara.  Sería imposible que el no lo supiera.
