Perhaps get into the habit of asking a key pupil what this means every lesson – make it a joke that this pupil always has to know this – other pupils will then seize on it too (you could do the same with ‘tengo’ and ‘tiene’ and ‘es’ and ‘soy’) These are all on the core language sheet and we want all pupils to be absolutely clear about these and how to use them in their own speaking. They could practise this short dialogue in pairs but then be challenged to produced variations. e.g. Cuantos boligrafos hay en tu estuche? Cuantos colores hay en esta aula? ¿Cuántas personas hay en tu familia? En mi familia hay 5 personas: mis padres, mi hermana, mi hermano y yo.

Mention perhaps here about the end of half-term project (i.e. PowerPoint presentation on them and their family) and get them to list in their books their own family members that they will want to include in it – they may need step-brother, aunt etc… This will be useful consolidation but with a purpose!

Tengo el pelo rubio y corto y los ojos castaños. Mi hermano tiene el pelo negro y rizado. Pupils could do these orally in pairs as the plenary.

8 Escribir Write as much as you can about yourself and your family. Look at your model sentences and adapt them for your piece. Include information of the following types: Names, ages, birthdays, physical descriptions, character. This could be hw for a more able class – you may need something much more structured for the lowest groups.
