Gender & Adjective Agreement Using nouns and adjectives

In Spanish, all nouns have gender and number. Gender refers to whether a noun is masculine or feminine. Number refers to whether a noun is singular or plural.

GENDER All nouns in Spanish are either masculine or feminine. If a noun refers specifically to a boy, it is masculine. Masculine nouns are accompanied by the articles el/los (the) or un/unos (a/some) If a noun refers specifically to a girl, it is feminine. Feminine nouns are accompanied by the articles la/las (the) or una/unas (a/some) However, most nouns are not people. So, how do we determine if nouns are masculine or feminine? THE WAY THE NOUN ENDS!

Masculine Nouns Nouns that refer to males are masculine. el hombre el chico el gato Nouns that end in o are masculine. el carro el piso

Feminine Nouns Nouns that refer to females are feminine La chica La profesora La gata Nouns that end in a are feminine La mesa La boca La luna There are other endings for feminine nouns: ción/sión dad/tad umbre

Adjective Agreement Adjectives must change form, or agree, with the noun they modify El chico alto masculine singular La chica alta feminine singular Los chicos altos masculine plural Las chicas altas feminine plural Adjectives that end in e do not change with gender, but can be plural: El chico inteligente La chica inteligente Los chicos inteligentes Las chicas inteligentes

Adjectives that end in r have 4 forms: El chico trabajadormasculine singular La chica trabajadorafeminine singular Los chicos trabajadoresmasculine plural Las chicas trabajadorasfeminine plural

ESCRIBE EN ESPAÑOL: 1. The man is strange. 2. The girls are outgoing. 3. The table is tall. 4. We (girls) are silly. 5. We (boys & girls) are hardworking. 6. The car is ugly. 7. The cars are ugly. 8. She is poor. 9. They (girls) are important.
