The direct object of a sentence receives the action of the verb. Direct objects answer the questions what? or who(m)? about the verb. Ana ve la tele. – La tele is the direct object. Escuchamos música. – Música is DO.

Pronouns Nouns used as direct objects can be replaced by pronouns. Pronouns are used to avoid repetition of the noun. ¿Necesitas la chaqueta? No la necesito. Do you need the jacket? I don’t need it. Do you need the jacket? I don’t need it. ¿Conoces los Martins? No los conozco. Do you know the Martins? I don’t know them. Do you know the Martins? I don’t know them.

Placement in sentence When there is an infinitive after the conjugated verb, the direct object pronoun may come before the conjugated verb or it may come after and be attached to the infinitive. Necesito sacar fotos para la clase de arte. Voy a sacarlas hoy. Necesito sacar fotos para la clase de arte. Voy a sacarlas hoy. Voy a comprar un abrigo. Voy a comprarlo en el centro commercial. Voy a comprar un abrigo. Voy a comprarlo en el centro commercial.
