11 CULTURA ¿C/F? Legends can be similar from one culture to another.  Cierto Why are legends important?  They reflect the history and culture of a place. They can also explain the reasons why things are they way they are. Many times they are loosly based on facts. What is the Ecuadorean legend we read about?  There was a poncho weaving contest to pay homage to the sun god. The winning poncho was red and had fringes to represent the sunbeams. People still wear this style poncho to this day. What is the legend of la llorona?  A woman’s children disappear and then she dies of sadness. She is constantly looking for them, and roams around screaming and crying.  A woman kills her children and then herself out of guilt. She roams around screaming and crying.
