1 Hechos 2: 1 El día de Pentecostés, todos los discípulos estaban reunidos en un mismo lugar. 2 De repente se oyó un gran ruido que venía del cielo, como cuando sopla un viento fuerte, que resonó por toda la casa donde se encontraban. 3 Entonces aparecieron lenguas de fuego, que se distribuyeron y se posaron sobre ellos;

6 Acts 2: 1 When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in one place together. 2 And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were. 3 Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them.

7 4 And they were all filled with the holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim, 5 Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven staying in Jerusalem. 6 At this sound, they gathered in a large crowd, but they were confused because each one heard them speaking in his own language.

8 7 They were astounded, and in amazement they asked, “Are not all these people who are speaking Galileans? 8 Then how does each of us hear them in his own native language? 9 We are Parthians, Medes, and Elamites, inhabitants of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,

9 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the districts of Libya near Cyrene, as well as travelers from Rome, 11 both Jews and converts to Judaism, Cretans and Arabs, yet we hear them speaking in our own tongues of the mighty acts of God." Word of the Lord.

On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors were locked, where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.” 20 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.

15 21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you
21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” 22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the holy Spirit. 23 Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.” Gospel of the Lord

17 Reflections on John 20:19 - 23 Reflexiones en Juan 20:19 - 23
by Fr. Sam Rosales, S.J May 24, 2015 Today is the Feast of Pentecost. Fifty days after Easter Sunday, something very mysterious and holy happened to the disciples of Jesus. The promise of the Father and the promise of Jesus came in the person of the Holy Spirit.

19 It must be noted that the Holy Spirit is eternal
It must be noted that the Holy Spirit is eternal. He is the third Person of the Blessed Trinity. He has always been. God does not reveal his divine personality immediately. In the Old Testament we see that God prepared us for Pentecost Sunday by the way he revealed himself. God used natural phenomenon in which we may see Him intervening in the physical world. When God revealed himself on Pentecost, he removed the veil from his holy Face, so that we would know more about him.

21 We note that the Holy Spirit was already intimately associated with Jesus as Messiah even from the moment of conception. Matthew 1:18 says: “Mary, the Mother of Jesus, was with child of the Holy Spirit.” In Luke 1:35 the Angel Gabriel said to our Lady: “The Holy Spirit will come upon you…” John the Baptist said: “Jesus would baptize us with the Holy Spirit and with fire” (Matthew 3:11 and Mark 1:8).

23 In Luke 4:16 it says: Jesus cited Isaiah 61:1 which says: ‘The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor… to proclaim liberty to captives, and the recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, and to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.’ “Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing” (Luke 4:21).

25 And in John 1: John the Baptist gave witness: “I saw the Spirit descend as a dove from heaven, and it remained on him. I myself did not know him; but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.”

27 Acts 10:38 reminds us how “God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all that were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.”

28 This is the Spirit of truth that Jesus promised us
This is the Spirit of truth that Jesus promised us. “When he comes he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.”

30 How awesome was the fulfillment of the promise of Jesus
How awesome was the fulfillment of the promise of Jesus! In the Acts of the Apostles chapter 2 we see how as they were together in one place “a sound came from heaven like the rush of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. Tongues as of fire appeared and rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and begin to speak in other tongues, as the Spirit gave utterance.”

32 “They were all astounded and bewildered, and said to one another, ‘What does this mean?’ But others said, scoffing, ‘They have had too much new wine’ ” (Acts 2:12-13). “Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice, and proclaimed to them, ‘You who are Jews, indeed all of you staying in Jerusalem. Let this be known to you, and listen to my words. These people are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o'clock in the morning’ ” (Acts 2:14-15).

34 Rather, this is the fulfillment of the word spoken by the prophet Joel ; “In the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and daughters shall prophecy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams… and all who call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved…” (Acts 2.l7-21).

(Hechos 2:l7-21).

36 We need to pray for a renewal of all the gifts of the Holy Spirit
We need to pray for a renewal of all the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Pray to the Lord that he may once again come and cast fire upon the earth, as Jesus promised in Luke 12:49. Pray that Jesus have mercy on us and once again send us “the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in his name… who will teach us all things, and bring to mind whatever Jesus has said to us” (John 14:26).

38 We need to humble ourselves and accept all the teaching the Lord sends us. “His anointing teaches you about everything, and is true, and is no lie…” (1 John 2:27). His unction poured upon us falls gently, but firmly. At the same time it allows freedom, vitality, and spontaneity. It falls penetratingly, with the divine caress of love. It is indefinable tenderness outpoured upon our thirsty wounded souls.

40 In Hebrew the word Ruah means Spirit. In its noun form it means “breath.” (or air which passes through our lungs). In its verb form the word used is Reah, (aroma, perfume, fragrance). Therefore, it is most suggestive. In Exodus 30:34-38 ancient Israel priests were sanctified and set apart, consecrated for the things of God, by ritual use of aromatic olive oil. Let us do the same. “This shall be my holy anointing oil throughout your generations” (Exodus 30:31). The Roman Catholic Church uses holy oil in administering the sacraments.

42 In the oldest texts of the Bible, Ruah also meant wind
In the oldest texts of the Bible, Ruah also meant wind. In Genesis 1:2 “In the beginning… the Spirit of God moved over the face of the waters.” Adam heard the “sound of God” walking in the cool breeze” (Genesis 3:8). In Genesis 8:1 “God remembered Noah… He made a wind (Ruah) blow over the earth, and the waters subsided.” In Exodus 14:21 “Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; the Lord drove the sea back by a strong east wind (Ruah).”

44 Great prophets uttered their messages with gasps and catchings of breath. Therefore, they were said to have a “prophetic spirit, or breath.” They were fearless, and announced the word with enthusiasm and rapture. The inspired writers harness this “breath” of God, and made it accessible in the scriptures. Thanks to them we have the Bible today. Let us pray for a renewal of the gift of prophecy in our churches today.

46 “Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful, an enkindle in us the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit, and they shall be created, and you shall renew the face of the earth.” Amen! Amen! Alleluia! ¡Amen! ¡Amen! ¡Aleluia!
