The verb to be is translated as two verbs in Spanish Ser and Estar.

5 Conditions Permanent Temporary Use SER for permanent conditions
1. Professions Yo soy un maestro. Ella es una ingeniera. 2. Race, religion, political affiliation Ella es Italiana. Ellos son católicos Ellos son demócratas 3.Qualities or characteristics Ella es alta Ella es amorosa y paciente Ellos son rubios Temporary Use ESTAR for temporary conditions 1. Emotions, discomforts, ¿Cómo esta maría? Ella está enferma. Ella está enojada. 2. Location (person, thing, or place ) ¿Dónde estás? ¿Dónde está el lápiz? ¿Dónde está Alaska? (except an event) 3.Food or things (taste, condition etc) Los tacos están muy ricos El caldo está caliente La alfombra está sucia Learning when to use the verb ser and estar is as simple as remembering the words permanent and temporary.
