3 Tú versus Usted (Ud.) Tú is used when talking to a friend, someone your own age or younger or family in some countries. When you are on a first name basis with someone you are being familiar. Usted is used when talking to an adult or someone in a position of authority. When you need to show respect to someone or when you are using someone’s title(ie: Mr., Mrs., Miss, Doctor, etc.) you are being polite.
