Notes on Ser/Ir in the Preterite Tense (i.e. Past Tense) Preterite means that the verbs are in the past tense. In Spanish, there are 2 past tenses. On a basic level, the Preterite tense is used for one-time events in the past, or for specific events in the past (we know when, where, or for how long it took place) Ser /Ir Ser and Ir have the SAME conjugations in the Preterite tense.
