I. “No améis el mundo”, 1 Jn. 2:15-16, Deseos malos, concupiscencia (epithumia), deseos de la carne, de los ojos, vanagloria de la vida. I. “Do not love the world,” 1 Jn. 2:15-16, Evil desires, concupiscence (epithumia), desires of the flesh, of the eyes, the pride of life.

Jn. 8:44, “los deseos” de Satanás; Sant. 1:14, “cada uno es tentado cuando de su propia concupiscencia es atraído y seducido”. Jn. 8:44, “the desires” of Satan; James 1:14, “each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust.”

Juan 15:18, 19 se refiere al mundo que aborrece a Dios. 2 Cor. 4:4, Satanás es el “dios” de este mundo. John 15:18, 19 refers to the world that hates God. 2 Cor. 4:4, Satan is the “god” of this world.

1 Jn. 2:17, “el mundo pasa, y sus deseos”. Los que viven para satisfacer los deseos de este mundo, no tendrán esos deseos cuando mueran. 1 Jn. 2:17, “the world passes and its desires”. Those who live to satisfy the desires of this world will not have those desires when they die.

“pero el que hace la voluntad de Dios permanece para siempre”; es decir, después del fin del mundo y sus deseos. “but he that does the will of God abides forever”; that is, after the end of the world and its desires.

II. Pero la palabra “mundo” tiene otros usos A. La tierra, Jn. 21:25, “no cabrían ni aun en el mundo los libros que se habrían de escribir”. II. But the word “world” has other uses A. The earth, Jn. 21:25, “even the world itself could not contain the books that would be written.”

B. La raza humana, Mat. 5:14, “sois la luz del mundo”; Jn. 3:16, “Dios amó al mundo”. B. The human race, Matt. 5:14, “you are the light of the world”; Jn. 3:16, “God… loved the world.”

C. La suma de las posesiones temporales, Mat. 16:26, “¿de qué le sirve al hombre si gana el mundo entero y pierde su alma?” C. The sum of temporal possessions, Matt. 16:26, “what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?”

Mat. 13:22, “las preocupaciones de este mundo y el engaño de las riquezas ahogan la palabra, y queda sin fruto”. Demasiado apegado al mundo. Matt. 13:22, “the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word and he becomes unfruitful.” Too attached to the world.

1 Cor. 7:31, “los que aprovechan el mundo, como si no lo aprovecharan plenamente; porque la apariencia de este mundo es pasajera”. 1 Cor. 7:31, “those who use the world, as though they did not make full use of it; for the form of this world is passing away.”

III. La Biblia emplea mucho lenguaje figurado (metáforas) para ilustrar la brevedad y lo incierto de la vida aquí en la tierra para que no estemos demasiado apegados al mundo. III. The Bible employs much figurative language (metaphors) to illustrate the brevity and uncer-tainty of life here on earth so that we won’t be too attached to the world.

Job 7:6, “Mis días pasan más veloces que la lanzadera del tejedor. 7 Recuerda que mi vida es un soplo”. Job 7:6, "My days are swifter than a weaver's shuttle. 7 Remember that my life is but a breath.”

Job 8:9, “nosotros somos de ayer y nada sabemos, pues nuestros días sobre la tierra son como una sombra”. Job 8:9, “we are only of yesterday and know nothing, because our days on earth are as a shadow.”

Job 9:25, “Mis días son más ligeros que un corredor. 26 Pasan como barcos de juncos, como águila que se arroja sobre su presa”. Job 9:25, "My days are swifter than a runner. 26 They pass by like reed ships, like an eagle swooping on its prey.”

Salmo 39:4, “Señor, hazme saber mi fin, y cuál es la medida de mis días, para que yo sepa cuán pasajero soy”. Ps. 39:4, "Lord, make me to know my end, And what is the measure of my days, That I may know how frail I am.”

Deut. 32:29, “¡Ojalá fueran sabios… y se dieran cuenta del fin que les espera!”… Job 6:11, “cuál es mi fin, para que yo resista?” Deut. 32:29, “Oh, that they were wise,… That they would consider their latter end!” Job 6:11, “And what is my end, that I should prolong my life?”

Muchos piensan que el “fin” de su vida es allá lejos en el futuro, que queda de gran distancia de ellos, que les queda mucho tiempo… Many think that the “end” of their life is way into the future, that it remains at a great distance from them, that they still have a lot of time…

Sal. 39:5, 6 “Tú has hecho mis días muy breves (lit., lo ancho de los cuatro dedos de la mano), y mi existencia es como… un soplo… una sombra”. Ps. 39:5, 6, “You have made my days as handbreadths, and my lifetime as a breath… as a shadow”.

Sant. 4:13, “¡Vamos pues ahora los que decís: "Hoy o mañana iremos a tal ciudad, estaremos allá un año y haremos negocios y ganaremos"! James 4:13, “Come now, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit”

Se basan en el hecho de haber vivido x número de años y, por eso, concluyen que pueden seguir viviendo por otros muchos años. They base this on the fact that they have lived x number of years and, therefore, conclude that they can continue living for many more years.

Mil cosas pueden suceder mañana. “14 Sin embargo, no sabéis cómo será vuestra vida mañana. Sois un vapor que aparece por un poco de tiempo y luego se desvanece”. A thousand things can happen tomorrow. “14 you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.”

2 Sam. 14:14, “A la verdad, todos hemos de morir; somos como el agua derramada en la tierra, que no se puede recoger”. 2 Sam. 14:14, “we will surely die and become like water spilled on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again.”

Tal vez pensemos que la vida aquí es muy larga. Hablamos de “tiempo largo”, de años y años, pero al comparar esta vida con la vida eterna, es como gota en el océano. Perhaps we think that life here is very long. We speak of a “long time,” of years and years, but comparing this life to life eternal, it’s like a drop in the ocean.

IV. La vida del cristiano en la tierra es como si fuera vida en un país extranjero. No es nada permanente. Y no es el destino final. IV. The life of the Christian on earth is like life in a foreign country. It is in no way permanent. And it is not the final destination.

La Biblia habla del cristiano como peregrino. Sal. 119:19, “Peregrino soy yo en la tierra”. No estar apegados a esta residencia tan transitoria. The Bible speaks of the Christian as a pilgrim. Ps. 119:19, “I am a stranger in the earth.” Not be attached to this temporary residence.

1 Ped. 1:17, “conducíos en temor todo el tiempo de vuestra peregrinación”. 2:11, “os ruego como a extranjeros y peregrinos”. 1 Pet. 1:17, “pass the time of your sojourning here in fear”. 2:11, “I beseech you as sojourners and pilgrims.”

No somos residentes permanentes, sino residentes temporáneos (transitorios). Somos como extranjeros, visitantes, viajeros, transeúntes. We are not permanent residents, but rather temporary residents. We are like foreigners, visitors, travellers, transients.

Somos como los que llevan “green cards” para vivir y trabajar aquí. Llevamos “green cards” espirituales porque somos de otra patria. We are like those who carry “green cards” to live and work here. We carry spiritual “green cards” because we are from a different country.

Fil. 3:19, Pablo habla de “los cuales piensan sólo en las cosas terrenales”. Los cristianos no piensan sólo en las cosas terrenales. Col. 3:1. Phil. 3:19, Paul speaks of those “who set their mind on earthly things.” Christians do not set their mind on earthly things. Col. 3:1.

“Porque nuestra ciudadanía está en los cielos, de donde también esperamos ardientemente al Salvador, el Señor Jesucristo” (v. 20). “For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ” (v. 20).

El cristiano sabe que la vida no consiste en los pocos años que vivimos aquí en este planeta, pues nuestra patria es el cielo y nuestra identidad no es con el tiempo sino con la eternidad. The Christian knows that life does not consist of the few years we live here on this planet, for our homeland is heaven and our identity is not with time but with eternity.

Supongamos que usted es embajador de Estados Unidos en un país enemigo. Aprende el idioma, se adapta a la cultura para ejercer su oficio. Suppose that you are the ambassador of the United States in an enemy country. Learn the language, adapt to culture, to exercise your office

Pero si llega a sentirse muy cómodo con ellos y su estilo de vida y que ese país llega a ser el país de su preferencia, ahora su lealtad cambia. But if you get to feeling more comfortable with them and their way of life and that country becomes your preferred country, now your loyalty changes.

Y eso afectaría su compromiso de representar este país como ciudadano fiel y leal. Incluso, bien podría llegar a ser traidor. And that would affect your commitment to represent this country as a faithful and loyal citizen. In fact, you might well become a traitor.

Hay miembros que están tan apegados a los asuntos de esta vida, familia, amigos, placeres, negocios, empleos, y mil actividades, que se les olvida quiénes son y cuál es su primera lealtad. There are members that are so attached to the affairs of this life, family, friends, pleasures, business, jobs, and a thousand activities, that they forget who they are and their first loyalty.

V. ¿Por qué Dios permite las pruebas – enfermedades, aflicciones, pobreza, dificultades, tristeza – y el rechazo del mundo? V. Why does God permit trials – illnesses, afflictions , poverty, difficulties, sadness – and the rejection of the world?

El cristiano podría desanimarse pensando que las promesas de Dios no se realizan, que las oracio-nes no son contestadas, que hay injusticias. The Christian could be discouraged thinking that God’s promises are not kept, that prayers are not answered, that there is injustice.

Pero tales sufrimientos nunca son el capítulo final de la historia. ¡El fin de la vida no es el fin! El “capítulo final” es el hogar permanente. But such sufferings are never the final chapter of the story. The end of life is not the end! The “final chapter” es our permanent home.

Dios permite que sus hijos sientan deseos y anhelos no cumplidos para evitar que estemos demasiado apegados al mundo (Heb. 11:10, 16). God permits His children to feel unfulfilled desires and longings to keep us from being too attached to the world (Heb. 11:10, 16).

No estamos completamente felices aquí porque esto no es plan de Dios. Hemos sido creados y recreados para algo mucho mejor. We are not completely happy here because this is not the plan of God. We have been created and recreated for something much better.

Venga lo que viniera, - sean cosas buenas o cosas malas – recordemos que todavía “no estamos en casa”. Come what may – whether good things or bad – remember that as yet “we are not at home.”
