Short and Long Forms

2 ¡OJO! There is no apostrophe in Spanish: ex: María’s So don’t use it!
SHOWING POSSESSION There are a few ways to show possession in Spanish: I. By using de + a noun/pronoun: Ejemplo: El caballo de mi tío. --> My Uncle’s horse. Ejemplo: La casa de ellos. --> Their house. ¡OJO! There is no apostrophe in Spanish: ex: María’s So don’t use it! Try these: * María’s friends. * Her homework.

3 SHOWING POSSESSION There are a few ways to show possession in Spanish:
I. By using de + a noun/pronoun: Ejemplo: El caballo de mi tío. --> My Uncle’s horse. Ejemplo: La casa de ellos. --> Their house. Try these: * María’s friends. --> Los amigos de María. * Her homework. --> La tarea de ella.

4 SHORT FORM II. By using the SHORT FORM of possessive adjectives:
Ejemplos: I don’t have my book. --> No tengo mi libro. Your neighbor is our friend. --> Tu vecino es nuestro amigo. mi(s) my tu(s) your su(s) his/her/your(f) nuestro(s) our nuestra(s) su(s) their/theirs

5 II. By using the SHORT FORM of possessive adjectives:
Try these: 1) I want his money. 2) She knows our family. 3) You have their book. xt mi(s) my tu(s) your su(s) his/her/your(f) nuestro(s) our nuestra(s) su(s) their/theirs

6 II. By using the SHORT FORM of possessive adjectives:
Try these: 1) I want his money. ---> Quiero su dinero. 2) She knows our family. ---> Ella conoce a nuestra familia. 3) You have their book. ---> Tú tienes su libro. (libro is singular therefore so in the possessive adjective) xt mi(s) my tu(s) your su(s) his/her/your(f) nuestro(s) our nuestra(s) su(s) their/theirs

7 LONG FORM III. By using the LONG FORM of possessive adjectives:
The long form agrees with what is being possessed NOT with who is possessing it. Ejemplos: --> A friend of mine. --> Un amigo mío. I have a book of hers. --> Tengo un libro suyo. mío(s), mía(s) (0f) mine tuyo(s), tuya(s) (of) yours suyo(s), suya(s) (of) his/her/yours(form.) nuestro(s) (0f) ours nuestra(s) suyo(s) (0f) theirs/(of) yours (pl) suya(s)

8 LONG FORM III. By using the LONG FORM of possessive adjectives:
Try these: 1) She is a teacher of ours. 2) He was a friend of yours. 3) They have a shirt of mine. 4) You know an aunt of theirs. mío(s), mía(s) (0f) mine tuyo(s), tuya(s) (of) yours suyo(s), suya(s) (of) his/her/yours(form) nuestro(s) (0f) ours nuestra(s) suyo(s) (0f) theirs/(of) yours (pl) suya(s)

Try these: 1) She is a teacher of ours. ---> Ella es una maestra nuestra. 2) He was a friend of yours. ---> Él era un amigo tuyo. 3) They have a shirt of mine. ---> Ellos tienen una camisa mía. 4) You know an aunt of theirs. ---> Tú conoces a una tía suya. mío(s), mía(s) (0f) mine tuyo(s), tuya(s) (of) yours suyo(s), suya(s) (of) his/her/ yours(sing/form.) nuestro(s) (0f) ours nuestra(s) suyo(s) (0f) theirs/(of) yours (pl) suya(s)

10 Examples: It’s mine. That is yours.
LONG FORM ¡Es el mío! ¡Es el mío! BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE... Sometimes when we speak we don’t need to use the noun in a sentence. Examples: It’s mine. That is yours. Unlike in English, when you want to do this in Spanish you still need to worry about the number and gender. TO DO THIS ALL YOU NEED TO DO IS REPLACE THE NOUN WITH THE ARTICLE (el, la, los, lash Ejemplos: I can’t find my book, can I use yours? --> No puedo encontrar mi libro, puedo usar el tuyo? I can’t find my books, can I use yours? --> No puedo encontrar mis libros, puedo usar los tuyos? Is that shoe yours? No, it’s theirs. ---> Es ese zapato tuyo? No, es el suyo.

2) They know a neighbor of ours. 3) Is it your pen? Yes, it’s mine. 4) His friend is their friend. 5) Her friends are their friends. 6) Her friend is a friend of yours. 7) I have some earrings of hers. No, they are mine. 8) Do you want an apple of ours?

1) I have a ring of hers. ---> Tengo un anillo suyo. 2) They know a neighbor of ours. ---> Ellos conocen a un vecino nuestro. 3) Is it your pen? Yes, it’s mine. ---> Es tu lápiz? Sí, es el mío. 4) His friend is their friend. ---> Su amigo es su amigo. 5) Her friends are their friends. ---> Sus amigos son sus amigos. 6) Her friend is a friend of yours. ---> Su amigo es un amigo tuyo. 7) I have some earrings of hers. No, they are mine. --> Tengo unos aretes suyos. No, son los míos. 8) Do you want an apple of ours? ---> ¿Quieres una mananza nuestra?
