1 Quasimodo: Check your answers  I have 5 brothers. -- Yo tengo cinco hermanos.  They have a tall uncle. -- Ellos tienen un tío alto.  We have 10 cousins. -- Nosotros tenemos diez primos.  I arrive at 6. – Yo vengo a las seis.  He comes to the party. – él viene a la fiesta.  We arrive at 8. – Nosotros venimos a las ocho.

2 Tener idioms:  Remember, an idiom is an expression that doesn’t make full sense when translated word for word. You need to look at the phrase as a whole.  These Tener idioms, however, aren’t like the “happy as a clam” example where you could express the same thing in a different way. These are the correct way of stating the different ideas. They just sound funny when translated word for word to English.  You will just need to memorize these and remember to use them in the given situations rather than trying to translate from English directly.

3 Tener que [infinitive] = to have to do something  Tengo que trabajar el lunes.  I have to work on Monday.  Ellos tienen que estudiar para la prueba.  They need to study for the quiz.  ¿Qué tienes que hacer hoy?  What do you have to do today?

4 Tener ___ años  ¿Cuántos años tienes tú?  Literally: How many years do you have?  Meaning: How old are you?  Yo tengo veinticinco años.  Literally: I have 25 years.  Meaning: I am 25 years old.

5 Tener (mucho) calor  Estamos en México de vacaciones. ¡Tenemos mucho calor!  Literally: We are in Mexico on vacation. We have a lot of heat!  Meaning: We are in Mexico on vacation. We are very warm/hot.

6 Tener (mucho) frío  Durante el invierno, ella tiene mucho frío.  Literally: During the winter she has a lot of cold.  Meaning: During the winter she is really cold.

7 Tener (mucho) cuidado  Él tiene mucho cuidado en el hielo pero todavía se cayó (he still fell).  Literally: He had a lot of care on the ice but he still fell.  Meaning: He was very careful on the ice but still fell.

8 Tener (mucho) miedo (de)  Mis hermanas tienen mucho miedo de las arañas.  Literally: My sisters have a lot of fear of the spiders.  Meaning: My sisters are very afraid of spiders.

9 Tener (much a ) hambre  Ella tiene mucha hambre.  Literally: She has a lot of hunger.  Meaning: She is very hungry.

10 Tener (much a ) sed  Ella tiene mucha sed.  Literally: She has a lot of thirst.  Meaning: She is very thirsty.
