5 Romans : Brothers and Sisters: Owe nothing to anyone, except to love one another; for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law.

6 The commandments, You shall not commit adultery; you shall not kill; you shall not steal; you shall not covet, and whatever other commandment there may be, are summed up in this saying, namely, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

7 Love does no evil to the neighbor; hence, love is the fulfillment of the law.

9 Reflections on Luke : Reflexiónes en Lucas 14: by Fr. Sam Rosales, S.J Nov. 7, 2007 This reading from St. Paul has much to teach us about love. Since there is much to say about this subject, we will examine it again and see what the early Fathers of the Church had to say about it.

11 First of all, St. Paul reminds us that the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. That is all we have to do to please God. It is that simple. We owe each other the love of the Lord. It is a debt. It needs to be paid. The entire bible is an attempt to help us understand this love. We should be repaying this debt every day.

13 Origen points out that in many cases debt is equivalent to sin (Commentary on the Epistle to the Romans). I suppose this kind of debt is due to such things as use of illegal drugs, drinking, or stealing, or smoking, misspending money in unnecessary luxuries, lusts of the flesh, etc. Our money should be used in other good healthy ways.

15 Theodoret of Cyr says that if a man is well disposed by love for another person, he will not kill the one he loves, nor will he rape his wife, nor steal his goods, or do anything that will harm others. (Interpretation of the Letter to the Romans).

17 Augustine says the rule of love is that one should wish his friend to have all the good things he wants to have himself (Of True Religion 87). I remember in a certain class the teacher had us write down all the things we wanted others to do for us. This took some time. We took it rather seriously.

19 Then, to my surprise, she said, go out and do just that to others
Then, to my surprise, she said, go out and do just that to others. Only then did I realize how selfish I had been in demanding so much for myself, without ever thinking of doing the same to others. That list would have been much shorter, had I known I would be asked to do likewise for somebody else!

21 The implications are enormous
The implications are enormous. If you like others to greet you, you should greet others first. And if you want others to love you, you should love them first. And if you want others to forgive you, do likewise. (Isn’t that what the Our Father says, “Forgive us as we forgive”?)

23 I just came back from Brazil. Fr. Harold J. Rahm, S. J
I just came back from Brazil. Fr. Harold J. Rahm, S.J., Founder of Our Lady’s Youth Center, is there. He loves everybody, and everybody loves him. Early in the morning I would wake up to see him greeting everybody: “Joya! Alegría! “ And this would often come with a big bear hug. This continued all day long.

25 I realized that was key to the healing from sadness, and depression, and thinking too much of oneself, and many other things that lead to people taking drugs. People need to know they are loved. Say it. Do it, many, many times. It’s as simple as that.

Dilo. Hazlo muchas, muchas veces. Es tan sencillo como eso.

27 “By this shall all men know that you are my disciples, that you love one another” said the Lord Jesus Christ (John 13 35). Our words can bring healing and life and happiness, or death and sadness and grief to others. It is your choice to make. Start early. Start now.

Comienza temprano. Comienza ahorita.

29 Our community should be known as a place where the love of Jesus is to be found, abundantly. For Jesus came to bring life in abundance. We can start by asking for each other’s name. And greet each other by name each time we meet.

31 St. Paul in Romans 12.9 says: “Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; love one another with brotherly affection; anticipate one another in showing honor. Do not grow slack in zeal, be fervent in spirit, and serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, endure in affliction, and persevere in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the holy ones, exercise hospitality.” That is what we should be known for.
