1 Lucas 1: En aquellos días, María se encaminó presurosa a un pueblo de las montañas de Judea, y entrando en la casa de Zacarías, saludó a Isabel. En cuanto ésta oyó el saludo de María, la criatura saltó en su seno.

2 Entonces Isabel quedó llena del Espíritu Santo y levantando la voz, exclamó: “¡Bendita tú entre las mujeres y bendito el fruto de tu vientre! ¿Quién soy yo, para que la madre de mi Señor venga a verme? Apenas llegó tu saludo a mis oídos, el niño saltó de gozo en mi seno. Dichosa tú, que has creído, porque se cumplirá cuanto te fue anunciado de parte del Señor ”.

15 First Apparition. In the year 1531, ten years after the conquest of Mexico, there was peace in the land and the faith begin to blossom. On Saturday, December 9th, at the crack of dawn, a poor Indian by the name of Juan Diego was on his way to assist at Mass.

16 Primera Aparición. En el año 1531, diez años después de la conquista de México, hubo paz en la tierra y empezó a brotar la fe. El día sábado, 9 de Diciembre, muy de madrugada, un pobre Indio, de nombre Juan Diego iba rumbo a asistir a la Misa.

17 As he passed by a small hill called Tepeyac, he heard beautiful music coming from the top of the hill. It was like the sound of many beautiful rare singing birds, such as the COYOLTOTOTL and the TZINIZCAN. Suddenly there was silence. Then he heard a beautiful voice calling him: “Juanito, Juan Dieguito”.

18 Al pasar junto al cerillo llamado Tepeyác, oyó cantar cantos suaves y deleitosos. Parecía ser como de pájaros lindos como el COYOLTOTOTL y el TZINIZCAN. Cesó repentinamente y se hizo el silencio. Oyó una bonita voz que le llamaba: “Juanito, Juan Dieguito”.

19 He moved toward this affectionate voice; it was like a mother calling a child. Then he saw a most beautiful woman calling him. “Juanito, smallest of my sons, where are you going?” He answered that he was on his way to her house in Tlatilolco, to hear about things divine, and to learn from the priests, who are delegates of Our Lord.

23 It is my desire that a temple be built here so that I can show all my love, compassion, help, and defense, for I am your loving Mother. There I will listen to all who call upon me and trust in me. I will hear their cries, and remedy their sorrows and their sufferings.

24 Deseo vivamente que se me erija aquí un templo para en él mostrar y dar todo mi amor, compasión, auxilio y defensa, pues yo soy vuestra piadosa madre; a ti, a todos vosotros juntos con los moradores de esta tierra y a los demás amadores míos que me invoquen y en mí confíen; oír allí sus lamentos, y remediar todas sus miserias, penas y dolores.

25 And to bring about all that I desire, go to the palace of the Bishop of Mexico and tell him I sent you to let him know what I desire: that a temple be built there. Tell him exactly what you have seen and heard, and admired. Be assured I will appreciate and reward you. I will make you happy. My son the smallest, go and strive to do my will.”

26 Y para realizar lo que mi clemencia pretende, ve al palacio del obispo en México y le dirás cómo yo te envío a manifestarle lo que mucho deseo, que aquí en el llano me edifique un templo. Le contarás puntualmente cuanto has visto y admirado y lo que has oído. Ten por seguro que lo agradeceré bien y lo pagaré. Te haré feliz. Mi hijo el más pequeño; anda y pon todo tu esfuerzo.”

27 Juan Diego bowed down before her and answered: “My lady, I will go and do your will, let me say goodbye to you, for I am your humble servant.”

28 Juan Diego se inclinó delante de ella y le dijo; “Señora mía, ya voy a cumplir tu mandado; por ahora me despido de ti, yo tu humilde siervo.”

29 He went directly to the Bishop, knelt at his feet, and delivered the message. But the Bishop told him to come back another day.

I saw the prelate, related the message, just as you wanted. He received me kindly and heard me attentively; but as soon as he responded, it seemed that he did not believe me. He said: “Come back another time, I will listen to you more slowly; and I will see from the beginning the sincerity with which you have come …”

35 I understood perfectly well the manner in which he spoke, that he thinks maybe it is my invention that you want a temple built here and maybe he thinks it is not from you. For this reason, I implore you, My Lady and My Child, that you ask one of the principals, well known, respected and esteemed, with your message, so that they will believe him.

36 Comprendí perfectamente en la manera como me respondió, que piensa que es quizás mi invención que Tú quieres que aquí te hagan un templo y que acaso no es de orden tuya; por lo cual, te ruego encarecidamente, Señora y Niña mía, que a alguno de tus principales, conocido, respetado y estimado le encargues que lleve tu mensaje para que le crean, porque yo soy un hombrecillo,

37 For I am but a small man, a piece of rope, a backpack, a tail, a leaf, common folk. And you, my Child, smallest of my daughters, my Lady, send me to a place where I don’t frequent. Forgive me if I cause you great disappointment, and get you angry, My Lady, and my Owner.”

39 Our Lady answered him: “Listen, smallest of my sons
Our Lady answered him: “Listen, smallest of my sons. Have it understood, that many are my servants and messengers, whom I can ask to take my message and do my will; but it is important that you be the one that asks and help me so that my will be done.

40 Nuestra Señora le contestó: “Oye, hijo mío el más pequeño, ten entendido que son muchos mis servidores y mensajeros, a quienes puedo encargar que lleven mi mensaje y hagan mi voluntad; pero es de todo punto preciso que tú mismo solicites y ayudes y que con tu mediación se cumpla mi voluntad.

41 Go again tomorrow to see the Bishop
Go again tomorrow to see the Bishop. Speak in my name, and let him know all my will. Tell him that I, in person, the ever Virgin Holy Mary, Mother of God, send you.”

42 Mucho te ruego, hijo mío el más pequeño, y con rigor te mando, que otra vez vayas mañana a ver al obispo. Dale parte en mi nombre y hazle saber por entero mi voluntad, que tiene que poner por obra el templo que le pido. Y otra vez dile que yo en persona, la siempre Virgen Santa Maria, Madre de Dios, te envía”.

43 Juan Diego answered: “My Lady and my Child, I will not cause you more affliction; gladly will I carry out your desire. Perhaps the Bishop will not hear me, or if he does, perhaps he will not believe me. I will return tomorrow afternoon to tell you what the Bishop answers. With your permission, I take leave of you, my sweet Lady. Rest quietly until I see you again.”

44 Juan Diego le respondió: “Señora y Niña mía, no te cause yo aflicción; de muy buena gana iré a cumplir tu mandado. Quizás el obispo no me oiga, o si fuere oído, quizás no se me creerá. Mañana en la tarde, cuando se ponga el sol, vendré a dar razón de tu mensaje con lo que responda el prelado. Ya de ti me despido, Hija mía la más pequeña, mi Niña y Señora, descansa entre tanto”.

45 Early Sunday morning, December 10th, Juan Diego went to see the Bishop again. Bursting into tears, he related the conversation with the Mother of God a second time. This time the Bishop was more sympathetic and questioned Juan closely. He asked for a special sign. When he dismissed Juan Diego, he instructed men to observe Juan, but they lost him.

46 Al día siguiente, domingo muy de madrugada, salió a ver al obispo otra vez. Lloró al exponerle la conversación con la Madre de Dios por segunda vez. Esta vez el obispo, para cerciorarse, le preguntó muchas cosas. Le pedió una seña especial. Cuando lo despidió, mando a unos hombres que lo observaran, pero lo perdieron.

47 Third Apparition. Juan reported to Our Lady
Third Apparition. Juan reported to Our Lady. She said: “So be it, my son. Come back tomorrow morning so that you may obtain the sign for the Bishop. With my sign he will believe you and no longer will he doubt you or suspect your good faith. Know that I will reward you for your trouble. At dawn tomorrow, I shall await you here.”

Tercera Aparición. Juan le reportó a Nuestra Señora. Ella dijo: “Bien está, hijo mío. Volverás aquí mañana para que lleves al obispo la señal que te ha pedido; con eso te creerá y acerca de esto ya no dudará ni de ti sospechará y sábete, hijito mío, que yo te pagaré todo. Mañana, aquí te aguardo.”

49 When Juan reached home that evening, he found his uncle, Juan Bernardino, very ill with a fever. He was distressed by his beloved uncle’s condition and spent the following day (Monday December 11th), nursing him. He was unable to keep his appointment with Our Lady at Tepeyac Hill. He decided the next day he would go get a priest to give his uncle the last sacraments.

50 Esa tarde cuando Juan llegó a su casa encontró que su tío, Juan Bernardino, estaba muy enfermo con una fiebre. Afligido por la condición de su querido tío, paso el siguiente día (lunes 11 de diciembre) atendiéndolo. No pudo cumplir con su cita con Nuestra Señora en el Tepeyac. Decidió al siguiente día ir a traer a un sacerdote para que le diera los últimos sacramentos a su tío.

At dawn on Tuesday, December 12th, Juan Diego approached Tepeyac Hill. He remembered Our Lady, but felt he had to take care of his uncle before attending to other duties. So he took a side path, reasoning that Our Lady would not see him. But Our Lady was there.

52 Al amanecer el martes, 12 de Diciembre, Juan Diego se acerco al Tepeyac. Recordó a Nuestra Señora, pero sintió que tenía que atender a su tío antes que todo. Tomó otro camino, para evitar a la Virgen. Pero allí estaba ella.

53 Fourth Apparition. Juan Diego saw Our Lady come down from the top of the hill to where he was. She asked: “What is happening, my dear son? Where are you going?”

54 Cuarta Aparición. Juan Diego vio a Nuestra Señora bajar de la cumbre del cerrillo a donde estaba él. Ella le preguntó. “¿Qué hay, hijo mío el más pequeño? ¿A dónde vas? ”

55 Overwhelmed with shame at having disappointed her, frightened, Juan Diego explained the situation with his uncle. Our Lady listened with compassion and then said:

Have I not placed you under my care? What else do you need? Do not let anything distress or disturb you. As for your uncle, at this very moment he is already cured.”

58 “Oye y ten entendido, hijo mío el más pequeño, no temas esta enfermedad ni ninguna otra aflicción o tristeza. ¿No estoy yo aquí que soy tu Madre? ¿No estás bajo mi sombra? ¿ No soy yo tu salud? ¿No estás por ventura en mi regazo? ¿Qué más has menester? No te apene ni te inquiete otra cosa; no te aflija la enfermedad de tu tío, que no morirá ahora de ella: está seguro de que ya sanó”.

59 Juan Diego was very much consoled. Once again he offered his services
Juan Diego was very much consoled. Once again he offered his services. He would take her sign to the Bishop. She instructed him. “Go to the summit of the hill where you first saw me, and where I gave you my orders. You will find various flowers. Cut them, gather them, and bring them to me.”

61 Juan Diego climbed the hill and found beautiful roses, even though it was not the season for them. He cut them and brought them to Our Lady. She said: “My son the smallest, these roses are the sign you are to take to the Bishop. You are to tell him my will, and that he has to fulfill it. You are my ambassador, worthy of my confidence. Only before the Bishop are you to let him know what you have. Tell him everything.”

62 Juan Diego subió al cerrillo y encontró bellísimas rosas, aunque no era tiempo para ellas. Las cortó y las trajo a Nuestra Señora. Ella dijo: “Hijo mío el más pequeño, esta diversidad de rosas es la prueba y señal que llevarás al obispo. Le dirás en mi nombre que vea en ella mi voluntad y que él tiene que cumplirla. Tú eres mi embajador, digno de confianza. Solo al obispo le has de decirle lo que traes. Dile todo.”

63 Juan Diego was very happy and assured
Juan Diego was very happy and assured. Very carefully he took the sign to the Bishop. When the Bishop received him, Juan Diego very carefully related all that Our Lady wanted. When he let his mantle down, the image of Our Lady appeared on the tilma just as we have it today.

65 The Bishop wept and asked forgiveness
The Bishop wept and asked forgiveness. Meanwhile, Juan Bernardino was healed. When they met him, he related that Our Lady had come to him and healed him. He asked her name. She was “Tecoatlaxopeuh” ( In Nahuatl, “The one who crushed the stone serpent”). The Spaniards heard it sound like “De-Guadalupe” and that is how she is known today.
