1 Juan 14:15 - 21 15 Jesús dijo a sus discípulos: “Si me aman, cumplirán mis mandamientos; 16 yo le rogaré al Padre y él les dará otro Paráclito para que esté siempre con ustedes, 17 el Espíritu de la verdad. El mundo no puede recibirlo, porque no lo ve ni lo conoce; ustedes, en cambio, sí lo conocen, porque habita entre ustedes y estará en ustedes.

2 18 No los dejaré desamparados, sino que volveré a ustedes. 19 Dentro de poco, el mundo no me verá más, pero ustedes sí me verán, porque yo permanezco vivo y ustedes también vivirán. 20 En aquel día entenderán que yo estoy en mi Padre, ustedes en mí y yo en ustedes. 21 El que acepta mis mandamientos y los cumple, ése me ama. Al que me ama a mí, lo amará mi Padre, yo también lo amaré y me manifestaré a él”.

5 John 14:15 - 21 15 Jesus said to his disciples: “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to be with you always, 17 the Spirit of truth, which the world cannot accept, because it neither sees nor knows it. But you know it, because it remains with you, and will be in you.

6 18 I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you. 19 In a little while the world will no longer see me, but you will see me, because I live and you will live. 20 On that day you will realize that I am in my Father and you are in me and I in you. 21 Whoever has my commandments and observes them is the one who loves me. And whoever loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and reveal myself to him.”

9 Reflections on John 14:15 - 21 Reflexiones en Juan 14:15 - 21 by Fr. Sam Rosales, S.J. May 25, 2014 Today is the Sixth Sunday of Easter. We will say a few words about the readings for the Mass of the day, and then make a few observations on the selected Gospel reading.

10 Hoy es el Sexto Domingo de Pascua. Diremos algunas palabras acerca de las lecturas de la Misa del día, y luego haremos unas cuantas observaciones acerca del evangelio de hoy.

11 In the first reading (Acts 8:5-8,14-17), the risen Christ is proclaimed by Philip in Samaria, where the crowds listened with attention, love, and joy “with one accord.” The Lord confirmed Philip’s work with accompanying signs and thus fulfilled Mark 16:20. In this case, unclean spirits came out of many possessed persons, and many paralyzed or crippled people were cured. Also, there was great joy in all this!

12 En la primera lectura (Hechos 8:5-8, 14-17), Cristo resucitado es proclamado por Felipe en Samaria, donde la muchedumbre escuchaba con atención, amor y gozo. El Señor confirmaba el trabajo de Felipe acompañandolo con milagros y asi se cumplio Marcos 16:20. En este caso, los espíritus inmundos, salían de muchas personas poseídas, y muchos paralíticos y lisiados quedaban curados. ¡Todo esto fue acompañado por un gran gozo!

13 “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever” (Hebrews 13:8). It seems to me that if he did it then, he can do it again. His power is not mitigated, or diminished with time. Therefore I look for the same signs today. For example, if joy is not present in our assembly, we must ask: Why not?

14 Ahora, Hebreos 13:8 dice que “Jesucristo es el mismo, ayer, ahora, y para siempre”. A mí me parece que lo que hizo ayer, lo puede hacer otra vez. Su poder no se ha diminuido con el tiempo. Por eso busco las mismas señas hoy. Si no hay gozo en nuestras asambleas hay que preguntar ¿Porqué no?

15 Some say there is much sadness and depression in our world today. Who needs that? I don’t. Pills to counter this are widely used, costing billions of dollars. Perhaps we need to try the “Gos-pill”, someone said (i.e. the Gospel of Jesus Christ). Thank God we have the Gospel of Jesus Christ which costs nothing, is free, God is love! The joy that God gave the Samaritans yesterday, he can give today.

16 Algunos dicen que hay mucha tristeza y depresión en el mundo de hoy. ¿Quién necesita más? Yo no. Los que fabrican píldoras pare combatir la depresión han de estar muy contentos, porque hacen billones de dolares. Gracias a Dios que tenemos el Evangelio de Jesucristo que no cuesta nada, es gratis, ¡es el amor de Dios! El gozo que Dios dio ayer a los de Samaria, lo puede dar hoy en nuestro pueblo.

17 The reading from (the First Letter of Peter 3:15-18) is one that I like. It says that we should “always be ready to give an explanation to anyone who asks you for a reason for your hope.” This means we really have an obligation in love to find answers and to try to be ready for the time when opportunity comes when we can explain our faith.

18 A mí me gusta la lectura de ( la Primera Carta de Pedro 3:15-18). Dice que “siempre hay que estar preparados para presentar una explicación a quien pregunte la razón por nuestra esperanza.” Esto quiere decir que en verdad tenemos una obligación en el amor encontrar respuestas y tratar de estar listos para el tiempo cuando se presente la oportunidad para explicar nuestra fe.

19 And yet we must “do it with gentleness and reverence.” People should be able to say, “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!” (Romans 10:15). This is a poetic way of saying Jesus is beautiful and so are those who are like Jesus. Right?

20 Y lo hacemos “con mansedumbre y reverencia”. La gente debe poder decir “¡Qué hermosos son los pies de los que anuncian la paz, de los que anuncian la buena nueva del evangelio!” (Romanos 10:15). Ésta es una manera poetica de hablar de la belleza de Cristo y de los que son como Cristo. ¿Correcto?

21 St. Paul comes to mind. He said: “I am eager to preach the gospel to you; I am not ashamed of the gospel: it is the power of God for salvation to every one who has faith” (Romans 1:15-16). “I long to see you, that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to strengthen you, that we may be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith, both yours and mine (Romans 1:11-12). It is in this spirit that I share my reflections with you. I pray that you may experience “the power of the risen Christ !” (Philippians 3:10).

22 Recuerdo a San Pablo que dice: “Por eso estoy listo para anunciarles el evangelio; Yo no tengo vergüenza del evangelio: tiene el poder de Dios para la salvación para todo aquel que tenga fe” (Romanos 1:15- 16). “Tengo muchas ganas de verlos para comunicarles algún don espiritual que los haga más firmes. De hecho, tanto ustedes como yo nos vamos a animar al compartir nuestra fe comun” (Romanos 1:11-12). Este es el espirito con que comparto mis reflexiones con ustedes. Le pido al Señor que sientan “¡el poder de Cristo resucitado!” (Filipenses 3:10).

23 The Gospel clearly proclaims that it is not enough to say: “Lord, Lord, I love you.” We also have to keep the commandments. Otherwise we are kidding ourselves. There is a time when actions speak louder than words. St. Ignatius Loyola said: “Love ought to manifest itself in deeds, rather than in words” (Sp. Ex. #230).

24 El evangelio de hoy claramente proclama que no es bastante decir “Señor, Señor, yo te amo.” También hay que guardar los mandamientos. De otra manera nos estamos engañando. Hay tiempo en el cual las acciones hablan más fuerte que las palabras. San Ignacio Loyola dijo: “El amor debe manifestarse más bien en hechos que en palabras” (Ejercicios Espirituales #230).

25 Further, he added that love consists in a mutual sharing of goods, e.g. the lover gives and shares with the beloved what he possesses, or something of that which he is able to give; and vice versa, the beloved shares with the lover. Hence, if one has knowledge, he shares with the one who does not have it; and so also if one has honors, or riches. One always gives to the other.

26 Además, dice que el amor consiste en compartir mutuamente los bienes. Por ejemplo, el que ama da y comparte con el ser amado lo que posee, o algo de aquello que el pueda dar; y vice versa, el amado comparte con el amador. Entonces, si alguien tiene conocimiento, lo comparte con el que no lo tiene; y así, si uno tiene honores, o riquezas. Uno siempre comparte con el otro.

27 When you love Jesus as he wishes, He said you will be loved by his Father, and He will love you and reveal himself to you! There is nothing greater! With that, you will be completely happy, and will lack nothing. Your joy will be complete. And you will say: “My cup overflows!” (Psalm 23:5). St. Teresa of Avila tells us: “He who has God, lacks nothing”!

28 Cuándo amas a Cristo, como Él lo desea, Él nos dijo que serás amado por su Padre, y Él te amará y ¡ se revelará a ti ! Con eso, serás muy feliz, y no necesitarás de nada. Tu gozo será completo. Y dirás : “¡ Mí copa esta rebozando !” (Salmo 23:5). Santa Teresa de Avila nos dice: “Al que a Dios tiene, ¡ nada le falta !”
