1 Bartels, Bucalo, Davies, Geyer January Expository writing is excellent! We are working on creating expository writing pieces in our writing time. We have talked about ways to brainstorm and organize our ideas by using the pick, list, choose method, which allows us to come up with distinct main ideas. Ask your child about overlapping details and why we don’t want them in our writing! We are currently writing an “I’m thankful for…” piece highlighting things that the students are thankful for. We have mastered the art of revision and editing to make our writing POP! Your child will be working on spelling words that are on his or her spelling development level. Each day, students will need to practice with their word sort words. They will have approximately 2 weeks to practice the words before taking their quiz. 4 th Grade Happenings Math Writing Word Work Reading Our goal for all students this year is that they become even better readers. Mrs. Bartels and Ms. Davies know that to meet this goal voracious reading is necessary; therefore, we expect all 4 th graders to read at least 40 books this school year between home and school. Although we’ve also set expectations about trying out a variety of genres to develop their “reading personalities,” students will select most of their own books using IPICK. We are finishing up our unit with fractions and will begin working with measurement. Our students will have to be able to change units of measurement (such as inches to feet), find the area of rectangles and squares, and the perimeter of most types of polygons. Please continue to work on multiplication facts. Science We are learning about natural resources, and patterns in nature. This will include the phases of the moon and the water cycle. We hope you had a great winter break. We look forward to working with your child the second semester and getting ready for the STAAR tests.

En una actividad de lluvia de ideas usamos el método de elegir un tema, hacer una lista, y escoger información para formar ideas principales distintas. Pregunte a su hijo en cuanto a los detalles sobrepuestos y por qué queremos evitarlos en la escritura. Estamos escribiendo sobre el tema, “Yo doy gracias por…” para expresar nuestro agradecimiento. Hemos aprendido a revisar y editar las composiciones para que nuestra escritura sea ¡de categoría! Su hijo estudiará el deletreo de palabras en su nivel designado de desarrollo. Cada día los alumnos deben practicar la categorización de palabras. Pasarán aproximadamente 2 semanas en la práctica antes de tomar el examen de ortografía. Acontecimientos de 4 to Grado Matemáticas Escritura Trabajando con Palabras Lectura La meta para todos los alumnos este año es de mejorar en la lectura. La Maestra Bartels y la Maestra Davies saben que para alcanzar esta meta es necesario leer vorazmente, y por eso nuestra expectativa es que cada alumno de cuarto grado lea un mínimo de 40 libros este año (entre la escuela y el hogar).
