14 Stem-Changing Verbs

15 o→ue verbs dormir- to sleep almorzar- to eat lunch volver- to return, to go back poder- can, to be able costar- to cost llover- to rain (this verb only has one form)

16 Boot verbs It may be easier to remember where the stem-changes in these verbs are if you picture a boot: The verbs inside the boot have a stem-change. The ones outside the boot do not.

17 e→ie stem-changing verbs querer- to want preferir- to prefer empezar- to begin merendar- to snack entender- to understand tener- to have (also a –go verb) 1.Pay attention to which E changes. 2.The first letter of the verb will never change. 3.Neither will the ER ending. 4.Rule: the stem-change is always in the next to last syllable.
