2 El pretérito: simple past tense -ar -é-amos -aste------- -ó-aron -er/ -ir -í-imos -iste------ -ió-ieron

3 El pretérito: Irregular in yo- -car =-qué tocar = toqué, tocaste, tocó, etc. -gar = -gué llegar = llegué, llegaste, llegó, etc. -zar =-cé almorzar = almorcé, almorzaste, etc. Changes i to y in both 3 rd persons- leer = leyó, leyeron oír = oyó, oyeron creer construir incluir

4 El pretérito: Verbos con cambios en la radical (-ir stem-changers) -ar and –er verbs do not stem-change in the preterite. Some –ir verbs do but only in the 3 rd persons. o-u dormir dormirse morir e-i pedir preferir competir sentir conseguir sentirse despedirse desvestirse repetir divertirse seguir servir vestirse

6 Times to use the preterite: 1) completed past action 2) action that happened once 3) action that happened in a definite period of time Irregular verbs in the preterite are numerous and are reviewed separately.

7 El imperfecto: was…, used to… -ar -aba-ábamos -abas------- -aba-aban -er/-ir -ía-íamos -ías------- -ía-ían

8 El imperfecto: was…, used to… There are only 3 irregular verbs in the imperfect!- ir, ser, ver Ver- veía veíamos veías-------- veía veían Ser- era éramos eras ------ era eran Ir- iba íbamos ibas -------- iba iban

10 Times to use the imperfect: 10) action occurred over time with no specific beginning or ending 11) action was going on (imperfect) when something happened (preterite)
