2 Familia rap (Get this song from YouTube) Listen to the rap all the way through once. Then give out the 16 lines of the rap cut up and get students to listen and put them in the correct order – it does go quickly but they do have the words appearing on the video to help. They may need to listen to it twice to do it. Get them to identify the chorus (not hard!) and get them to practise pronouncing the chorus with you and then listen to the song again with them trying to say the chorus words in time. The verses begin to use vocabulary from physical description that they will be doing as their next topic so it wouldn’t be bad to get ideas from them about what the words mean – if they learn a few of these new words from the song, it will be a good bridge into the next topic for them. Finally, it might be worth seeing if they can come up with a verse of their own, using their own members of the family. They can use vocab books and just stick to names, ages, nationalities. Of course, any space in this lesson could be used for follow up vocabulary work, sentence-building, using ‘tener’ to make sure they know this verb etc...

Familias en España Para los españoles, la familia es muy importante. La familia está formada por los padres y los hijos. Hay muchos abuelos que viven con sus hijos al quedarse viudos. Estos ayudan a ciudar y educar a los nietos. Hoy día hay muhcas familias con un solo hijo. La natalidad ha descendido mucho en los últimos años, no como en otros tiempos, en que las familias eran mucho más numerosas, con cinco o seis hijos. Es estos tiempos, surgen nuevos tipos de familia: las familias monoparentales (aquellas en las que los hijos viven con uno de los padres), familias con hijos aportados por ambos components de las pareja, familias con hijos adoptados, etc.. Use this text as a ‘reading out loud’ pronunciation activity, a search for specific vocabulary opportunity, an opportunity to learn some new facts – e.g. Lots of grandparents live with families and take care of children, birth rate very very low in Spain now (compare with England?)
