The easiest thing is to get the correct part numbers to predictech for the probe, extension cable and probe driver and predictech can determine what system you have and need.The Proximity probe systems consist of 3 parts: probe, extension cable and Driver.1) There are many variables to the probe. Different lengths, Different tip sizes (5,8,11 and 25 mm) Note: The bigger the tip size the farther the probe will read from an object. 25 mm tip reads greater distance than the 5mm. There are different threaded and unthreaded lengths (this determines how it fits into the machine, if you have ¼” 28UNF and your machine requires a Metrix Thread (M8 x 1)) your probe is not going to fit. You need to determine if you need armor or unarmored cable.2) The extension cable connects the probe to the probe drive. The key selection criteria for extension cable, besides cable type- armored or unarmored is you need to have the probe and extension cable be at the correct system length- 15,20 ft or 5 or 9 meter. So, if you need an 9 meter system length and you have a 1 meter probe, you need an 8 meter extension cable. Note: Some of the older series probes (3000 series) you need to double length of the proximity probe. So if you have 6 inch probe (with 3000 series) it is really electrically 12” + 14 foot extension cable gives you a system length of 15 feet.3) Last part of the proximity probe system is the probe driver. The probe driver provides power to the probe, conditions the signal and then amplifies the signal to the Vibration Monitor. The correct probe driver (5m, 9m 15ft or 20ft) needs to be matched with the correct system length. I have a 5 meter probe and extension cable, I must use this with probe driver that was designed for 5 meter system. You can also verify you are using the correct probe tip with the probe driver. Note: Probe Driver can be replaced with another Predictech probe driver, DTM or TR Series Transmitters. You only need probe driver if you are sending the signal to Vibration Monitor Rack (like PT2060).If your 3 parts (probe , extension cable and probe driver) do not match up, there will be huge problems because the system will not be linear. You will have bad data, resulting in spurious shutdowns- when your machinery is really ok, or you can have a fail dangerous situation. Your equipment is operating at high vibration level, and there is no indication of this problem.-the estimated number of proximity probe systems installed is over 20 million--- lots of pieces!! 9 Sensores de Proximidad- Linearización del Sistema If your probe, extension cable and probe driver do not match up correctly you will have linearization problems. Now which line looks like the Ideal line that you want to have? Well, it’s the pretty line in pink! Nice and straight. The other 2 lines show the results of having wrong probe driver, too short of cables and inaccurate target material and too long of cables.-When you have problems with accuracy of systems that leads to nuisance trips or lack of sufficient vibration protection.There was one customer at an air separation plant (motor application) and they had a situation that was close to this yellow line…The end user was getting significantly less then the 200mV/mil output that they expected (So instead of having the pink line they were operating on the yellow line). The output signal was indicating the motor was operating well within its vibration range (reading said 2 mils) but in reality they were well over their shutdown level (alarm was set for 3 mils and they were operating at 6 mils!!). So it is a very dangerous situation that was caused by a simple human error.IT IS ESTIMATED THAT UP TO 5% of proximity probe installations have installation errors!!!
