2 Infinitives There are three types of infinitives in Spanish: -AR, -ER, and -IR The most common are -AR verbs. To use -AR verbs in a sentence you have to conjugate them into the right tense.

3 Definitions for Conjugation: Infinitive – the basic form of the verb; In English: to + an action (to speak, to need, to look for, to buy.) In Spanish: an action + ar (hablar, necesitar, buscar, comprar.) Conjugate – to change the verb from infinitive form to a form that matches the subject. Each subject will use a different verb ending. Stem – the part of the infinitive after you drop the -ar infinitive ending. This part contains the meaning of the verb. (habl- necesit-, busc-, compr-.) Endings: Spanish verbs require a different set of endings. The endings will indicate what subject is doing the action.

5 Conjugation: To conjugate the verb aplastar cucarachas, which means to squash roaches, you would remove the -ar infinitive ending and replace it with the appropriate verb ending.
