2 Qué es el preterito? Preterite means “past tense”
Preterite verbs deal with “completed past action” The endings tell who did the action.

As you can guess there are 12 irregulars: Ir/ser- fui, fuiste, fue, fuimos fueron Hacer- hice, hiciste, hizo, hicimos, hicieron Venir- vine, viniste, vino, vinimos, vinieron Querer- quise, quisiste, quiso, quisimos, quisieron Saber- supe, supiste, supo, supimos, supieron Poder- pude, pudiste, pudo, pudimos, pudieron

7 J- Stems There are irregular verbs that change their stems. These verbs are called J-Stems. 8 Sole Verbs In the present tense we have spelling changes called shoe verbs, but in the preterite there is another type of stem-changes only occurs in the 3rd person singular and plural forms. These are called Sole Verbs. Ex. of shoe verb: Ex. of sole verb: servir servir sirvo servimos sirves servís sirve sirven serví servimos serviste servisteis sirvió sirvieron Here are some other examples of sole verbs: Pedir, vestirse, preferir, dormir, morir

12 Preterite- stem changers
-Ar verbs that have a stem change in the present tense do not have a stem change in the preterite.

13 Car, Gar, Zar verbs All of their other preterite forms are regular.
Spelling change verbs are those who add or change letters to keep the correct sound. All of their other preterite forms are regular.

You need to change the”C” to a “Q” in order to keep the hard “K” sound next to an “E” sacar yo saqué buscar yo busqué tocar yo toqué Ex: Cuántos libros sacaste de la biblioteca ayer? Saqué dos.

15 Examples of Gar.. Ex. Cuándo llegaste al teatro? Llegué a las ocho.
GAR verbs need to add a “U” when the endings are “E” in order to keep the hard “G” sounds. pagar yo pagué llegar yo llegué jugar yo jugué Ex. Cuándo llegaste al teatro? Llegué a las ocho.

16 Examples of Zar… empezar yo empecé comenzar yo comencé
In –ZAR verbs you need to change the “C” to a “Z” in order to keep the soft “C” sounds next to an “E” empezar yo empecé comenzar yo comencé almorzar yo almorcé
