The verb tener means to have or to possess. It is an irregular -er verb that is conjugated as follows: tengo tienes tiene tenemos tenéis tienen Notice the irregular yo form . . . . . . and the changes that occur in the stem of the second-person singular and third persons.

One of the special, idiomatic uses of tener is with the relator que plus an infinitive to express the idea of to have to (do something).

One of the special, idiomatic uses of tener is with the relator que plus an infinitive to express the idea of to have to (do something). We start with an appropriate person and number of tener . . . add the little word que . . . and then add any infinitive. estudiar estudiar leer tengo tengo tenemos escribir comer tienes tenéis que que hablar aprender tiene tienen escuchar decidir Tengo que estudiar para el examen de español. I have to study for the Spanish exam. Conjugate tener, add que, and then always add an infinitive, not a conjugated verb.

Don’t forget que! I have to clean the garage. Tengo que limpiar el garaje. Do you have to study a lot? ¿Tienes que estudiar mucho? We have to prepare the food. Tenemos que preparar la comida.
