25 The Dead Deer El venado muerto
The eastern trecenas are dedicated to the dead deer. Similar to the mountains during winter, the deer is covered in white and is discolored. It rests. It has lost its warmth. It consumes or regurgitates an agave drink called pulque (meoctli) and simultaneously excretes riches. The buck is venerated and was decorated with precious adornments. On its head it wears a headdress that’s golden like the sun and in the form of the malinalli (herb) glyph/sign. On his back, he carries an arrangement of the same herb. His collar and earrings are insignias of Tonatiuh, the sun. On his rear it has a jade piece, a hieroglyph associated to Chalchuitl icue, all terrestrial water. Las trecenas orientales son dedicadas al venado muerto. Como los cerros invernales, el venado lleva una piel blanca y descolorida. Reposa. Perdió su calor. Consume o devuelve pulque (meoctli) y a la vez excreta riquezas. El ciervo es venerado y se le colocaron adornos preciosos. Sobre su cabeza lleva un tocado dorado como el sol y en forma del glifo/signo malinalli (hierba). También lleva un manojo de la misma hierba sobre el homo. Su collar y aretes son insignias de Tonatiuh, el sol. En su sentadura luce una cuenta de jade, el jeroglífico de Chalchihuitl icue, el agua terrestre.

26 The Arrowed Deer El venado flechado A male whitetail deer is being pierced by a flint-point reed arrow that’s stabilized by golden eagle feathers and chick down. Blood spurts out of the deer’s nose forming the water glyph—with jewel tipped edges. Contrastingly, the blood that shoots out of the wound represents solar energy. The deer’s shutting eyes and elongated tongue are signs of being near death. “Un ciervo macho es atravesado por una flecha de carrizo con punta de pedernal— equilibrada por plumas de águila real y plumones de polluelo. De la nariz del venado brota sangre en forma del glifo de agua—con sus puntas enjoyadas. En contraste, la sangre que derrama la herida representa a la energía solar.
