One year later, Alonso de Ojeda and Amerigo Vespucci mapped the coastal area where the Orinoco River empties in the Atlantic and the area round Lake Maracaibo. The waterways reminded them of the canals of Venice, and thus they named the area Venezuela, or Little Venice.
