2 ESTAR (to be) WITH PREPOSITIONS 1.You've already used some forms of the verb estar to talk about how someone is feeling or where someone is or something is. o Estar is irregular in the present tense.

3 ESTAR: SIMPLE RULES There are two situations in which we use a form of estar. 1. LOCATION (asking or telling where something or someone is): Example: Chicago y Nueva York están en los Estados Unidos. 2. TEMPORARY CONDITION (describing a physical or emotional condition that can change)

4 Examples of ESTAR, temporary condition  Yo estoy bien (enfermo)  La casa está sucia (limpia)  Usted está contento/feliz (triste)  I am well (sick)  The house is dirty (clean)  You are happy (sad)

5 ESTAR/TO BE…..conjugation  yo estoy  tú estás  Ud., él, ella está  nosotros(as) estamos  vosotros(as) estáis  Uds., ellos, ellas están  I am  You are  He/she is  We are  You all (plural)  They are

6 ESTAR CONTINUE…..  2.The verb estar is also used with some prepositions to say where someone or something is in relation to someone or something else.

7 Prepositions with ESTAR  Some prepositions are made up of more than one word:  detrás de behind  delante de in front of  cerca de close to, near  lejos de far from  debajo de underneath  encima de on top of, Above  al lado de next to

8 EXAMPLES/EJEMPLOS  —¿Dónde está tu apartamento?  Where is your apartment?  está detrás de un edificio grande.  It is behind the big building.
