3/24/2017 4:01 PM Nuestra aproximación Developer Insight RULES (Analysis) CONNECTION Application Knowledge ALERTS (Problems) TASKS EVENTS (NT, LOGS) + METRICS (WMI, SNMP, SCRIPTS) Operational Practices Out-of-box solution Facilitate preemptive monitoring Reduce time to diagnosis & repair Developed by Subject Matter Experts Microsoft (Developers, MCS, PSS) Third Parties (Dell, Siebel) Custom (LOB App) At Microsoft the biggest investment we are making to make Windows and our server product more manageable is to develop MOM Management Packs. We are leveraging our unique position of owning the Operating System, Services and Management tool to bring the greatest value to our customers. Each product group – Windows, Exchange, SQL, etc… is investing their expert knowledge in their MOM MPs allowing our customers to “stand on their shoulders” and benefit from their insights into how our products work and how they need to be monitored. Of course to complete the management of a datacenter, one needs to manage more than the Windows OS and the Microsoft applications deployed on those servers. You also need end-to-end management of your environment from hardware and storage to backup/restore and anti-virus solutions that sit atop the key LOB applications. We are encouraging these third parties to develop Management Packs for use in MOM to facilitate their integration into the datacenter operations. This is fundamentally new paradigm for management: that application owners develop their own Management Packs for MOM because Management Packs because they best know how to manage their application. The goals of MPs as extensions to MOM are that the provide a mechanism to give the operators and administrators a single consistent tool to manage their Windows infrastructure and the applications running on it, so they no longer need to rely on a disparate set of tools to manage the varied elements of their datacenter. The breadth and depth of monitoring provided in these Management Packs, combined with the knowledge they incorporate will help to reduce the time to accurately diagnose and respond to issues, thus lowering the TCO. Simultaneously, this high level of monitoring will allow much greater preemptive intervention, and hence a higher quality service by detecting issues before they result in a service interruption. By building a definition of server health into Management Packs, the result is a management solution that is largely out of box with very simple deployment and configuration. This results in a rapid return on investment without a protracted deployment period requiring large investments. Management Pack Philosophy Effective front-line monitoring requires:  watching the right set of details  broad spectrum of health indicators (e.g. events and perf counters) Without this detailed monitoring  few preemptive actions possible  Servers are managed reactively MOM + Management Packs facilitate such monitoring  higher service quality at a lower cost © Microsoft Corporation. 29 SMS 2003 Security Patch Management Asset Management
3/24/2017 4:01 PM SMS 2003 Security Patch Management Asset Management Application Deployment Support for the Mobile Workforce Systems Management Server 2003 is Microsoft’s enterprise change and configuration management solution for application deployment, asset management, and security patch management. Today, global businesses use SMS 2003 to deliver the latest business applications to clients, whether on laptops, devices, or servers. Standardizing on Systems Management Server, Motorola saved more than 247,000 admin hours over 800,000 software deployments to 65,000 desktops, saving an estimated $11 million. Capital Securities in Taiwan for example has saved over 90% of their IT staff workload by using SMS 2003 to distribute software. For asset management, SMS allows you to selectively collect inventory on all the hardware and software in your enterprise, as well as track usage and compliance. A global 500 healthcare company used software metering to reduce support costs by 25%. With over 8,000 applications across 110k PCs worldwide, metering laptops suggests 50-60% all apps can be retired greatly reducing staffing needs. Asset tracking also helped reduce Help Desk budget - outsourced help desk service charged at $300/pc/year and accurate asset tracking saved them 5-10% annually. A key concern today is the management of security patches, and SMS 2003 is Microsoft’s enterprise solution for patch management. SMS 2003 is the tool that MS IT is using to deploy and ensure compliance of security patches across Microsoft.  Using SMS 2003, MS IT can obtain an SLA of 97% compliance, with 100% accountability of patch deployment to the 5,500+ Windows servers they manage within 7 hours.  To support these core capabilities, SMS 2003 extends these capabilities to both infrequently connected and bandwidth-limited users, allowing you to manage your growing mobile workforce. Finally, to ensure that you get the most out of your Microsoft investment, SMS fully utilizes Active Directory, Windows Management Instrumentation, Add/Remove programs, Microsoft Installer, and Bandwidth Intelligent Transfer Services – although these are not requirements. Application Deployment Deliver critical business productivity applications reliably and easily to users in the right place at the right time. Asset Management Reduce software costs and helps customers stay compliant by tracking and reporting on the installed application base and their usage. Security Patch Management Improve security of the Windows® environment through increased vulnerability awareness and reliable targeted delivery of updates, Mobility Deliver enterprise management to the growing mobile workforce through industry standards independent of connection or location. 31 Security Patch Management
3/24/2017 4:01 PM Security Patch Management A secure Windows environment through Collection of critical patch information Vulnerability assessment of existing environment Quick and easy deployment of patches Targeted delivery of patches Verification and reporting on patch deployment Business Demands Problem – corporations want a set of tools and processes that allow them to determine which Windows systems are in need of critical patches, and then quickly test and deploy these patches throughout their enterprise. SMS 2003 solves this by gathering patch information from all of your Windows systems for you to determine your vulnerabilities, and then quickly get these patches and deploy them with the accuracy and control you need. SMS 2003 delivers and end-to-end solution in patch management from planning, testing, staging, deploying, verification, and reporting. It is difficult to quantify the cost of security breaches because most companies do not report attacks. However, the Computer Security Institute and the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation perform an annual computer crime and security survey that tallied more than $201 million in quantified financial losses in Among respondents, the most frequently cited forms of attack were viruses (82 percent) and insider abuse of network access (80 percent). Theft of proprietary information caused the greatest financial loss, with an average reported loss of $2.7 million. Note: To access the 2003 CSI/FBI Computer Crime and Security Survey, see: Proactive patch management The widespread damage caused by the "SQL Slammer" worm (also known as "Sapphire") and the earlier "Nimda" worm emphasize the importance, and limitations, of an active enterprise patch management program. The common thread between the two attacks is that both exploited PC or server vulnerabilities that had been identified and publicized months earlier. Even more troubling, in both cases, patches that would have closed these vulnerabilities had been available to network administrators for months before the attacks occurred. UPS spent $22 million to develop the Deliver Information Acquisition Device (DIAD) IV, which will be used by 70,000 drivers worldwide. The DIAD IV driver terminal, a compact, rugged device powered by Windows CE .Net., includes a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver, a bar code scanner and a color screen. They plan to spend another $127 million over the next five years on global deployment of a new driver terminal that features built-in cellular, wireless LAN and Bluetooth short-range wireless systems. How will they keep these systems updated with the latest applications? How will they ensure that these systems are patched? © Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. 3/24/2017 4:01 PM Mobility Support for roaming and infrequently connected mobile users Delivery of critical business services and applications—reliably and timely Automatically detect changes in position Support for Mobility Windows Management Services Integration Windows compliance Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 Certification Optimal integration of Windows management services Active Directory simplifies SMS planning and deployment Core Windows Services Integration Windows Installer Service (MSI) Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) Reduces costs through leveraging existing infrastructure and capabilities Problem – business is becoming more mobile. Not only are more users tethered to a laptop instead of a desktop, but the services these users depend upon are the services that are running business. SMS 2003 solves this by extending its best of breed solution for asset management and software distribution to include the mobile needs of laptop users for delivering these services. When delivering these critical services reliably and timely, it is important to remember these are customer facing value add services. This translates to customer service enhancing services that generate revenue for your company. SMS 2003 Delivers © Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. These are XML files that describe task sequences the ADS controller execute. Create the golden image(s). Utilize WinPE and a scripted unattend process to create a golden image that contains all the chosen OS configurations, SPs, Patches, and core applications. WinPE may be booted from a CD or ADS may be used here to deliver a WinPE image to the target disk and then boot into WinPE to run the unattend build and post OS scripts and application installs. The ADS Administration Agent is also installed. Run Sysprep.exe on the device and shut it down. Capture the golden image and place image into the repository Identify new devices and enter the variable information that will assign a golden image from the repository and customize the image to give it a unique personality when mini setup runs. Alternatively new devices when PXE booted may be discovered and presented to the operator. The operator may choose to “take control” of the new device and run a “job” against it at any time. Devices which are not “under control” are ignored by the ADS PXE boot controller and will proceed with their boot order processing. Slide narrative: A new machine for which a MAC address is known and entered into ADS boots and registers with the ADS controller. Other device unique variables are also set. Controller downloads the Deployment Agent. Certificates and encryption is used to ensure secure communication and PXE controller source. Controller instructs the Deployment Agent to download the assigned image file. This could be unicast or multicast to many machines (known as a “set”). Without rebooting, the controller task sequence will instruct the Deployment Agent to mount the new image, replace variables placed within the Sysprep.inf file to customize the new device and reboot the device. The controller will ignore the following PXE boot requests causing the device to boot from hard disk. After mini-setup completes and reboots into the new OS, the ADS Administration Agent communicates with the controller for possible further task sequences and the controller will send those “jobs” to the device until the sequence is completed or a failure occurs. The ADS MMC will report the status the entire process and all features and status are available though WMI. Reduce from 24 Servers to at worst 18 production Servers (targeting to get down to 15) and 1 reporting Server Collapse 3 additional MOM environments used by 2 BUIT’s and Exchange Team into the above architecture which will allow us to cut about another 30 servers currently being used by those groups. “These numbers are getting close to being locked down. In the infrastructure space, we plan on dropping from eight to four Management Groups A.K.A Configuration Groups. The number of servers currently in the environment is 24, and in the plan for new architecture, the number is projected to be 15 production servers and 1 reporting server. In the event of a scale issue during deployment, this number may increase by 3 servers making the total number for production 18, as a fallback. That accounts for one reduction that will take place. The second is that there are three additional MOM environments that we plan on collapsing into this architecture. They are currently operated by BGIT, AIT and Exchange. With those environments completely collapsed there will be an additional server reduction of around 30 servers. This increase in monitoring needs has been factored into the design of the MOM 2005 architecture so we are not planning to expand the Infrastructure environment beyond the numbers stated above. The plan is to transfer the Management Packs that each environment is currently running and the associated business logic into the new environment.” © Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
