una mirada crítica a la naturaleza de los que aún no han nacido, y sus implicaciones con relación al aborto del artículo “¿Cree usted que el embrión/feto no es un ser humano?” It is important to focus this whole presentation on the nature of the unborn. Inevitably side issues will come up, such as What about rape and incest? What about tubular pregnancies, et cetera. All of those are legitimate questions with strong reasonable responses but THEY ARE NOT WHAT THIS IS ALL ABOUT. It is important to realize this and not be side-tracked when giving this. Focus here on the nature of the unborn. Is it a human being or not? In focusing on the nature of the unborn, many of these questions will be answered along the way…

There is no special magic moment in which a non-human becomes human. This is a fallacy which confuses stage of development with one’s very nature. Using this logic - that it isn’t fully developed therefore it is not human - would allow us to call anyone, from adult on down, a non-human. That would allow us to take their life at a whim, as well.

The obvious bad logic here is that one’s very nature is being defined by one’s locality in space (or in time, as we will see). Of course, the logic is absurd, as seen on the next slide as well. What is the real difference between being in the womb or out, other than location? Some will say dependence on the mother (that argument is tackled shortly).

Some abortionists take this half-way out thing very seriously: Abortionists sometimes refer to Partial Birth Abortions or similar types of abortions as "Dilation and Extraction" (D&X), or "intact D&E" (IDE). This procedure is used for women who are 20 to 32 weeks pregnant -- or even later into pregnancy. Guided by ultrasound, the abortionist reaches into the uterus, grabs the unborn baby’s leg with forceps, and pulls the baby into the birth canal, except for the head, which is deliberately kept just inside the womb. (At this point in a partial-birth abortion, the baby is alive.) Then the abortionist jams scissors into the back of the baby’s skull and spreads the tips of the scissors apart to enlarge the wound. After removing the scissors, a suction catheter is inserted into the skull and the baby’s brains are sucked out. The collapsed head is then removed from the uterus. Everyone in this picture has some imperfection, or abnormality. But they are all human. The convenience with this definition of course comes in allowing one to abort a child not to our liking or our ideals. For some, the wrong eye color might mean imperfection. And when we allow humanness to be defined by what we say is imperfection we slide down a slippery slope. It doesn’t even call into question whether the being is even born or not. We can ultimately then apply our definition to those already born as imperfect and begin infanticide or forced euthanasia or genocide. ¿Como usted o yo?

This disarms a proabortion person - we fully admit this doesn’t look like the cute baby pictures we all see. Because that is the whole point. As in the following examples…

Highly emotional, but highly illogical, as well. At some point someone may argue that this picture representing a VERY young, just-after-fertilization zygote could not possibly be human. But we would argue that logically it could be nothing else. For the Christians in the group, we are not saying we know when it becomes a “spiritual being.” It might be at the moment of conception, it might be later. We are convinced God is involved with the whole process. But we simply do not know when it becomes a spiritual being. Since we do not know, we will assume for safety’s sake it is alive spiritually from conception. We won’t take the chance of taking its life, something which is beyond our right or privilege. The immediate point of this presentation is the nature of the being: Is the unborn human, or not? So we will continue focusing on that.
